Cortisone injections to relieve pain and inflammation in the feet and ankles

At Médecine podiatrique du Plateau, your podiatric clinic in Gatineau, we offer cortisone injections, an effective treatment to reduce inflammation and quickly relieve pain. This treatment is particularly indicated for conditions such as heel pain, heel spurs, plantar fasciitis, osteoarthritis and arthritis, metatarsalgia, Morton’s neuroma and joint inflammation.

How do cortisone injections work?

Cortisone is a hormone naturally present in the body that plays a key role in the management of inflammation. For the purposes of medicine, the Corticosteroids are synthetically produced to reproduce the actions of cortisone in reducing inflammation.
These are the most powerful drugs for reducing pain caused by inflammation.

Administered directly into the painful area, cortisone precisely targets inflammation, providing fast, long-lasting relief.

Ultrasound in the medical field

Increasingly, different disciplines in the health field are using ultrasound as part of the diagnosis and treatment of certain problems. This is also the case in podiatric medicine. Ultrasound is a technique that uses sound waves that are inaudible to the human ear to create images of the inside of the body. It’s a bit like radar: the waves bounce off organs, muscles or bones, and these echoes are transformed into images that can be seen on a screen. Ultrasound is a painless, x-ray-free examination often used to see the fetus during gestation or to look at organs, blood vessels, muscles, tendons and joints.

Ultrasound-guided cortisone injections

For greater accuracy, our podiatrists use ultrasound to guide their injections. This allows them to visualize the area to be treated in real time and position the needle with maximum precision, ensuring that cortisone is injected exactly where it is needed.

Benefits of cortisone injections

  • Fast relief of pain and inflammation
  • Precise treatment through the use of ultrasound
  • Reduction of potential complications related to the injection, for example by ensuring that the needle does not approach nearby blood vessels and nerves
  • Reduction of the quantities of medication needed by delivering the medication to the right place
  • Suitable for acute high pain and chronic problems such as plantar fasciitis and forefoot pain

The process

Before thinking about an injection, you must meet with one of our podiatrists to discuss your symptoms, do a physical examination and evaluate different aspects of your health and physical activities in order to present you with the different possible treatments. Your podiatrist will be able to tell you if a cortisone injection is the best choice for your situation.

Once this first step is complete, a separate appointment may be required to proceed with the injection. At this time, your podiatrist cleans the skin at the injection site and places gel and an ultrasound probe in the area to obtain an accurate image of the injured area. The needle is then gently guided to the injection site. Once the damage to the injured site is validated, cortisone is carefully injected.

The protocol after the injection

Most people can return to their usual activities soon after an injection. Generally, your podiatrist will ask you to limit your physical activities during the first few days after the injection. In addition, to reduce the discomfort associated with the injection itself, your podiatrist may recommend the application of ice and the use of analgesics.

Some people may experience a temporary increase in pain at the injection site for the first few days. This is a known side effect. Fortunately, it does not diminish the effectiveness of the treatment.
