At Médecine podiatrique du Plateau in Gatineau, we offer treatment of plantar and other foot warts with bleomycin sulfate. The action of bleomycin is antiviral, disrupting the division of skin cells infected by the virus, and interfering with the proliferation of its genetic material. This highly effective treatment can treat large warts or stubborn warts that have failed various treatments, including over-the-counter treatments, liquid nitrogen, chemical treatments with salicylic acid or cantharidin. Bleomycin can even treat recurrences of the problem after wart excision surgery, where viruses have remained in the skin after surgery and started multiplying again. Bleomycin is a powerful and proven treatment for even the toughest plantar warts.

Your podiatrist will ask you questions about the history of your lesion(s), treatments tried and your health condition. He or she will then perform a clinical examination to assess the distribution, size and depth of the warts.
How does bleomycin treatment work?
First, your podiatrist cleans the skin around the warts with a solution such as chlorhexidine. Then, using a syringe with a very fine needle, he or she injects bleomycin and a local anaesthetic just under the skin, making sure to distribute the medication evenly to cover the entire wart. In the case of large warts or multiple warts, the needle must be inserted at several points. If necessary, your podiatrist can numb the affected area before administering bleomycin. A dressing is then applied to the lesions. Your podiatrist explains post-operative care and signs to watch out for that require closer follow-up.
It is normal to feel at least some discomfort and even some pain in the treated area for a few days to a few weeks after treatment. Over-the-counter analgesics are usually sufficient to manage these symptoms. A few days to a few weeks after treatment, treated warts very often turn brownish-black. A blister or small sore may also form at the treated site.
Your podiatrist will apply a bandage to the warts, which you should keep on for a short time after the appointment. After that, you’ll need to cover the warts for a few days and clean the skin around the wart daily.
A follow-up appointment will be scheduled 4 to 8 weeks after your treatment to assess healing. A follow-up appointment will be scheduled 4 to 8 weeks after your treatment to assess healing.
